The Data Center Debate

The same standard we hold our sources to

Disclosures

This site grades every source by who paid for it. Here is the same answer about the site itself, including the part where its author benefits.

Who runs this site

One person built it and runs it as a personal project, and pays its bills (hosting, the domain and the daily research run) out of pocket. That person also runs Criterion B, DBA Canonball Creative Inc., a marketing company. Criterion B is not a data center operator, utility, industry group or advocacy organization, and it has no part in what this site says.

The shirts

  • Criterion B sells them. When you buy a shirt, you are buying it from Criterion B. Checkout runs through its Stripe account, and it prints and ships each shirt to order through a fulfillment service.
  • Criterion B pays the costs: the blank shirt, printing, postage and card fees.
  • Criterion B pays the site's author a royalty of $6 per shirt under a license for the design and the site's name. That money goes to the author personally, and it is meant to offset what the site costs to run.
  • Criterion B keeps whatever is left after the costs and the royalty.

So the author benefits from every shirt twice: once through the royalty, and once as the owner of the company that sells it. That is why this page exists.

What it does not change

No money is accepted from data center operators, utilities, industry groups, political action committees, campaigns or advocacy organizations on any side of this debate. Buying a shirt or chipping in buys nothing, including influence, a mention, a link or any say in what the site covers. If any of this changes, this page will say so before it happens, not after.
