Fremont County, Wyoming learns of $66 billion data center plan with no zoning authority

Aethel Energy is finishing a 1 megawatt data center near Lost Cabin and told Fremont County commissioners it could expand on the same ground into a roughly $66 billion campus powered by about 500 megawatts of on site natural gas generation. The county has no zoning code, so commissioners said they have no formal role in reviewing the larger project and learned about the plan from a courtesy notice. State permits through Wyoming's Department of Environmental Quality and Industrial Siting Council would govern the project.

Check it: Only a 1 MW first phase is actually under construction; the $66 billion figure is a company plan, not a committed investment or an approved project.

Black Hills Corp signs definitive agreements to serve Google's planned Cheyenne, Wyoming data center with roughly 2.7 GW of new resources

Black Hills Corp said it has signed definitive agreements with Google covering about 2.7 GW of total resource mix for a planned data center campus in Cheyenne, including roughly 1.8 billion dollars of utility invested natural gas generation and a Google funded private microgrid. The utility says structure is designed so Google covers project costs through dedicated tariffs. The deal still requires regulatory approvals in Wyoming.

Check it: Whether other Black Hills customers end up subsidizing any portion of the 1.8 billion dollars depends on the final tariff language approved by the Wyoming PSC; promises in the announcement are not the same as the final order.

Cheyenne council advances Orchard Hills data center on second reading over planning commission denial

The Cheyenne City Council on October 1 advanced annexation and rezoning for the 162 acre Orchard Hills data center project proposed by Dallas based Trammell Crow Company, adjacent to an existing Meta campus. The council overrode a unanimous planning commission denial, with only two members voting no. A final vote is scheduled for October 12.

Check it: The council vote was a second reading, so the project is not yet finally approved, and residents objected that the elected board was overruling the planning commission.

Cheyenne city council approves 1,260 acre Cox Ranch annexation and rezoning for data center

The Cheyenne City Council voted 8 to 2 on third and final reading to annex the 1,260 acre Cox Ranch property west of Roundtop Road and rezone it from agricultural to business park, clearing SkyBox Data Centers and ViaWest Group to proceed with a data center. Residents raised objections about noise, lighting, water, wildlife, and traffic. Cheyenne already has ten operating, five under construction, and nine in development data centers.

Check it: Rezoning does not finalize a data center design; a site plan, utility service agreement, and water allocation will set the project's actual footprint.
